Album of the Day

Once again, the wonderfully stealthy (in band jamming recordings too) Matt has struck again.

And since we have a Song of the Day and Band of the Day updated recently, here's three cheers for an Album of the Day.

Jimmy Eat World - Chasing This Light (2007)

And here's one of the singles from their album.

Band of the Day

This is not the song of the day. Its time Mute Math took a break.
So today's chart topper is... SALVADOR!

This song is Lord I Come Before You
Its really sleek, an overall good performance.

Back to the awesome band. Its got lovely brasses to add that tang to their music. Yes. I like their music. Credit to macandcheese for introducing them.

Song of the day

Heres another Song of the Day which would probably be the Song of the Day for the next many Days!

Band: Simple Plan
Song: Take my hand

This song has an awesome intro / riff lol. This can be a possible candidate for our next jamming? Btw, I couldnt find the official music vid, so i got this instead, which allows you to sing along haha. Enjoy.

jam session 30th june 2008

Good job guys. Wanna thank Avery Khoo for coming down, made an excellent roadie/sound guy. We got one song up on myspace (http://www.myspace.com/weareunband). It's an instrumental cover of "Afterglow" by Finding Michelle, thanks to them for the song. It really doesn't follow the song much, just slightly. A few mistakes here and there, but we were messing around quite a bit and yup for a first it's definitely not bad in my opinion :). Please go listen and give your feedback

My taste in drum "gear"

Playing battle of the bands on facebook has inspired me to write a bit about my taste in drum stuff. Well my set up is really simple, I use a cheap(well not that cheap, but some weird taiwan brand) set, it's maple wood. 14" wood snare, 16" floor tom, and I think a 12 and 13 rack tom. So my set up is a very standard jazz kinda set up, I use only the 12" and 16" toms. Now comes the expensive-r part.

Cymbals:
Started out with cheapo Paiste 101s. For people with a real tight budget I actually think the ride's not too bad for ... anything but crashing. Quite dark sound, but that's probably just because its lousy and has no tone so it sounds flat and dry.

I've got a 16" Avedis Fast Crash, wouldn't recommend that to anybody. Regret getting it kinda. It's only really nice for malleting, you get this really grand big sound that you wouldn't expect from a fast crash.
Next up are my 14" A Custom Projection Hats. Very "chicky", with a large bell. Loud. Not recommended for home sets, but I think they're pretty good for rock/heavier genres when gigging.
And my prized possession, a 20" K Custom Medium Ride which I only purchased a few months back. It's a rather versatile ride, but more towards the jazz side. Does not complement my hats at all. The ride sounds either awesome or aweful, depending on the song. But the bell is very nice.

Pedals:
I use Pearl Eliminators, the P-2002Cs. Err I'm not very good at double pedalling though. They're nice pedals, smooth and they look good too. Preferred them to the iron cobras (Tama). Durability wise it's been reviewed pretty well, not too pricey either.

Sticks:
Ah a drummer's arsenal of woody things. I have not found a pair of nylon tipped sticks that I like. I mainly switch between Vater Manhatten 7As and Zildjian Jazz woodtips. Err also have got a pair of zildjian horacio "el negro" hernandez sticks. Those are really thin. Can't remember what the other pair is, some artist series as well. Bascially I like 7A-ish sized sticks. Oh I've also got the cool Hard Rock Cafe Chicago sticks that Chin bought me but I can't bear to trash them so I'll keep em nice and un used.
Mallets are double sided (other end have wood tips), ZIldjian John Riley's I think.
Promark brushes, hot rods. Regarding rods, I recommend Cool Rods (Promark) or Vic Firth Rutes which I used to have...it's just a matter of getting the right size.

And that sums up my drum gear. peace.

Artist of the Day

Today's artist of the day (not that there is a regular artist of the day or anything) is Mute Math. This song's called typical.

For the sake of the more ignorant people such as myself, the band basically recorded the music video backwards (singing, playing everything backwards). Then when they broadcast the music video they play it backwards from backwards which means its normal in sound but the video is actually backwards. If you understood that good job :). But of course they play the proper audio track over the recorded video which explains the flawless audio, but most of the video coincides.

Not to be outdone

I will not fail to mesmerize you with my pro guitar skillz.

That is, if you can actually hear me when we jam.

Song List #1

Alright so for the upcoming jam, we'll have Rob on bass. I want two electrics, or at least one acoustic and one electric, so the second guitarist can at least be heard. Matt can join us I guess provided you learn the songs. Please and try and bring amps... You guys want pianorokr down or not?

List of songs from last session that we should be able to play:
1. Butterfly
2. This Love
3. What I've Done

Songs that I want to try (feel free to add to the list)
1. Into the Night - Santana feat Chad Kroeger
but don't know whether this is feasible

2. Baby when you're gone - Bryan Adams
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-0IeJMfFKg
the live versions are cooler, but he gets fans to sing with him and they kinda suck. Listen to the live version especially for bass and stuff

3. Can't take my eyes off of you :D - Just watch the muse cover la, original by frankie valli i think

Yeah that's my input for now. We should work on our vocals and dynamics, and start to explore other genre's. Need to get to a level where we can just hear the song and make it our own.

One suggestion for jamming was this friday, err end by 5 preferably?

Fun-O-RamaR

On the 29th of March (slightly more than a week ago) the members of un-band had rendezvous at 31 Dover Close to take part in a secret gathering of a few thousand privileged people to have a good time going wild. Yes, this was legal. Un-band witnessed a formula drift car inside a very tight compound, we passed by flying cd-s and landed ourselves in a haunted hotel. The thought of it sent shivers down our spines. Yet we gritted our teeth and entered the spooky place to face our fears and say hi to a few of the scarier ghosts. Other than that, it was an enjoyable time.

Personally, time was very tight for the duration leading up to funorama, but now I have some time to sit back and complete the other mountain of homework. Oh, I just received a brilliant book, bass for dummies! lol. So here an update on our extremely slack lives! Cheers

Rift Raft Rob and the KickAss Bass

Well seeing as nobody's posted anything in awhile, I decided to take the initiative. Rob got his bass on saturday and so is on his way to becoming even more macho. I on the other hand have acquired a secret book of exercises that the real pros use....hehehh. A song which I was recently introduced to and find quite nice - Face Down by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus!

The First Meeting

Alright everybody, today a few of un-band kinda met up to just jam, and we also got a chance to hear mentos in his guitaring prowess. Thong also came down and really made a huge difference with superb bass skills! I'll let the others put in their feedback too but I just want to say a few things about today's session.

Firstly I'll talk bout the bandmates for today. Gaby is seriously good. Like whoa solos are amazing now and she plays faster than I can say bob. Rob I think has good potential and will make a good bassist, he learns real fast and pluck pretty fast too. Singing wise err...most of the time he sings in tune but for some stuff can't reach the notes but a considerable upgrade from GS' vocalist. So I suppose we're still searching for a vocalist. Mentos. Hmm well he showed ability to learn, but yeah I suppose he lacks practice and experience and stuff. Like firstly he needs his own gear so that he can be familiar with tones and all, be it with an electric or acoustic guitar. So I think we'll continue "monitoring" him I suppose.

I had a little jam with Thong later on and all I can say is it's one of the best grooves I've had. His own fills/punches are like somehow the same as what I like to play, and yeah it was really very nicely syncopated. He played digimon awesome, especially with Gaby on the electric. The tones were perfect. Absolutely perfect.

Anyway some of the stuff we covered were: This Love (maroon5), she will be loved (maroon5), what i've done (linkinpark) and the digimon song;butterfly! Oh we also did the adventure by Angels and airwaves. Focus was this love and butterfly.

Honestly speaking good job to everybody, it was the best jam I've had so far, although it was a little tiring. So hopefully we can do black parade for mentos the next time round, along with more songs! Suggestions please! MStick out.

Un-Jam (Now with 50% more dash-es)

So Un-band (with a dash) had their first ever jam with unofficial members and i thought it was pretty good jam. like, some of the best jam i have had in a while. hopefully it will get even better for the subsequent jams.

Kay, i'll leave the recount to you guys. My back is killing me from lugging my monster amp ;-;

And we should sooo totally make a list of songs to learn.

La~~~la~~ <--- A singer!

Hey peeps. Our band, it seems is lacking in certain key areas of an ideal band, namely, a keyboardist and vocalistS. As of now, I'll be a singer!! =) So cool. Due to certain disruptions to our current jamming schedules, we are unable to organise a proper session. But we in un-band do not grow slack so easily.
We have out-sourced an additional bassist in China who may indicate interest in joining our band. But of course, we still have vacancies for other instruments as well. Spread the word around.. un-band is the band to be in if you wanna chill, hang out and have a ball of a time.
Tommorrow is founder's day, where all those from the AllCanSwim family gather and celebrate the founding of our gr8 sch00l.
The band members are considering opening an email account to keep up with the times and to facilitate with the huge orders of interested fans =) So stick around for updates ^^

EDIT: WE got an email! woohoo ok all you fans out there fret not... un-band is LIVE ON THE NET w00t. Catch us at weareun.band@gmail.com ! Yes, its un-band with a dash but gmail stinks ok. We dont have a dash but a dot will do. Cheers
